Help requested for Guatemala’s leather-loving shoemakers

09/08/2017
Footwear production in Guatemala has reached levels of 40 million pairs per year, manufacturing sector leaders have said, with leather the material of choice among local producers.

However, according to Juan Carlos Teffel, president of the Industrial Association of Guatemala, retailers and wholesalers in the Central American are importing four times as many shoes again every year, many of them made from synthetic materials.

Mr Teffel said his organisation has asked the government to take notice of the situation and help the footwear industry in Guatemala improve, for example by making consumer-facing companies comply with existing labelling requirements.
