Menorca footwear figure dies

A senior figure in the Spanish footwear industry, in particular the industry on the island of Menorca, Antonio Cardona, has died.

Mr Cardona was born in 1927 in the town of Alaior and left school at the age of only 12. He worked on the land with his father for a number of years before learning the craft of shoemaking, of which Menorca has a long tradition.

He founded a co-operative for footwear manufacturers on the island, calling it after St Crispin, the patron saint of shoe manufacturers, in 1953. Out of conviction that co-operatives can benefit small businesses, he was also instrumental in setting one up for livestock farmers on Menorca. In time, he became an adviser to groups of business people all over Spain who were interested in the co-operative model.
