Colombia lifts tariff on Mercosur shoes

02/08/2017
Brazilian footwear industry association Abicalçados has welcomed a decision by the Colombian government to waive a tariff on imports of cheaper shoes. The tariff of 35% on imports of shoes costing between $6 and $10 per pair remains in place, but imports from Mercosur countries ( Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) will now be exempt. Colombia is an associate Mercosur country.

Abicalçados executive president, Heitor Klein, said the move was welcome. He explained that shipments from Brazilian manufacturers to Colombia had fallen by 2% in the first six months of 2017, largely because the tariff was making Brazilian shoes too expensive.

Brazil exported almost 10 million pairs of shoes to Colombia in 2016.
