The footwear industry will be one of five sectors to benefit from a new industrial development plan announced by the government of the autonomous community of La Rioja in northern Spain.

La Rioja’s government has set aside €140 million to help footwear manufacturers in the region, with their counterparts in the wood, metal, plastic and food sectors, to take steps towards Industry 4.0 between now and 2020.

In a detailed plan, the region’s politicians have set out a series of objectives that it wants manufacturers to use the money to meet. They want productivity in La Rioja to increase and to have a value of €80,000 per employee per year. They also want companies to double their spend on research and development, from €34.1 million per year across the region at the moment to more than €70 million.

The plan also says that the percentage of people with PhDs working in research and development in La Rioja’s manufacturing companies must increase from under 3% at the moment to 6% over the four-year period.
