“Better prospects” for Italian footwear in Russia

30/03/2017
Led by footwear manufacturers’ association Assocalzaturifici, 130 Italian shoe brands displayed their collections for Autumn/Winter 2017-18 at the Obuv’ Mir Koži exhibition in Moscow (March 21-24).

At the October 2016 edition of the event, Italian companies reported a “significant drop” in orders. At the Micam footwear exhibition in February, the president of Assocalzaturifici, Annarita Pilotti, said that exports to Russia and CIS region (also known as the Russian Commonwealth) were down 40% in volume and 50% in value compared to three years ago.

There was better news this time around. Arturo Venanzo, Assocalzaturifici director and coordinator for the Russia and CIS region, said after the event that there had been an “upswing in orders” from the area. He cautioned that there was still work to be done to return to the export levels of 2013, but said “better prospects are emerging for the months to come”.

He added that Obuv’ Mir Koži remains a crucial event for Italian companies, saying it ranks only behind the Micam exhibition in importance.
