Brazil launches new programme to help increase productivity
12/10/2016
Speaking at a formal launch event in Porto Alegre on October 7, Mr Pereira explained that the programme is based on teaching lean manufacturing techniques to these smaller businesses, helping them identify and eliminate seven different types of inefficiencies and waste: over-production, excessive lead-times, transportation costs, excessive processing, poor inventory management, ineffective work-flow and product defects.
Mr Pereira said that in pilot projects run earlier this year, participating companies had been able to achieve an average improvement in productivity of 50%, and that in some cases productivity had increased by as much as 80%.
Companies in the footwear sector are included in the list of those entitled to apply for a place on the programme. Participating companies must have at least 11 employees and no more than 200. Taking part costs 18,000 reals, but participating companies only have to pay 3,000, with the rest coming from government funding for Brasil Mais Produtivo.
