FICE president optimistic after latest Momad Shoes

The president of the principal footwear industry association in Spain, FICE, José María Monzonís, said at the end of the most recent Momad Shoes exhibition in Madrid (September 9-11) that he was optimistic about the event’s future.

Unconfirmed figures suggest a 30% increase in exhibitor numbers and exhibition space, Mr Monzonís said during the show. Organisers had been expecting 470 exhibitors at Momad Shoes and an increase in the number of visitors compared to the September 2015 event, when almost 4,400 visitors turned up. Again, unofficial figures have suggested a rise in visitor numbers of 10%.

Pedro Miralles, who runs the high-end women’s footwear brand of the same name, said earlier this year that export markets have become more and more important for his company in the last 20 years and now account for 60% of sales. However, he said he remains of the opinion that it’s important for Spain, as one of the most important shoe-producing countries in the world, to have “a national footwear exhibition” such as Momad Shoes. He went on to suggest that an Iberian event, for Spanish and Portuguese producers together, could also work well.

However, uncertainty over dates for Momad Shoes and its relationship with the Momad Metrópolis textile and apparel event continues.

In September 2015, the organisers announced that the first editions of these two shows in 2016 would run separately. Immediate feedback following Momad Metrópolis in February 2016 and Momad Shoes in March was that the idea of separating them had worked well.

Nevertheless, organiser Ifema packaged them together again in September 2016, only to admit in comments to local media that it had taken this step to save money and was less than content with the way it had worked out.

As things stand, it looks as though, in 2017, Momad Shoes will stand alone again.
