In recent months, several European luxury goods brands have blamed a drop in tourism in Europe for disappointing financial results. Although this study didn’t examine tourist numbers, the figures would support the claims.
Europe has been hit by several terrorist attacks in the last 18 months leading to a dip in visitor numbers. France, the country most affect by such attacks, saw a 17.6% drop in tourist spending in June. Tourists also spent less in Germany (-18.2%) and Italy (-18.9%) during the period examined.
The UK, currently suffering from some political stability following the decision to leave the European Union, registered a 17.1% drop in tourist spending last month, having recorded an increase of 2.6% in May.
Tourist spending was down in other regions, most notably Asia Pacific (-4.1%). Global Blue said that China was one of the countries where tourist spending dipped the most in June, with a drop of 17.5%.
