Italian designer launches shoes made from recycled fishing nets

08/07/2016
Shoe designer Andrea Verdura has unveiled a collection of boots and sandals made of recycled fishing nets. Having already been launched in boutiques in Italy and Spain during 2015, the range will now be available on a limited basis in the US via a Kickstarter campaign.

The nets are cleaned, cut and washed to soften them. They are then dyed with natural pigments to reduce the impact on the environment. To this same end, Mr Verdura also decided to use materials like cork for the anatomical footbeds and waste leather from shoe production for the back strap of the sandals. The shoes include recycled Vibram rubber in the soles and incorporate vegetable-tanned leather.

The company also announced a partnership with non-profit marine wildlife conservation organisation, Sea Shepherd to end the destruction of habitat and killing of wildlife in the world’s oceans. As part of the deal, Sea Shepherd will provide Verdura with some of the fishing net it uses in its footwear.
