Asics develops colour-changing fabric for footwear

Japanese sportswear group Asics has joined forces with textiles maker Toray to develop a new textile for use in footwear that changes colour depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

The fabric, which is being called the Chemeloid Mesh, will feature in Asics’ new running shoe, the Gel-Quantum 360 CM, as well as in its Tiger shoes. Asics says that the material offers high performance on top of its interesting aesthetic quality. It is the result of joint research between the ASICS Institute of Sports Science and the Toray Advanced Textiles Development Centre.

According to Asics, the material is highly elastic for a comfortable fit and it allows for better flexibility in a shoe by following the foot’s form as it bends and moves. It also has “excellent memory” to remember continuous changes in the form of the foot.

“We are happy to have developed a new textile with colours that change depending on the angle of viewing, and that we can offer this product to our customers,” said Kenta Moriyasu, footwear function development team manager at the Asics Institute of Sports Science.
“By analysing in detail the changes in running and walking foot form, we were able to construct an upper and develop materials that follow the form of the foot,” he added.

“Using Toray’s high-performance fibres and textile design technology, we were able to develop a material with a special design and that offers a high degree of functionality,” confirmed Satoshi Naruko from Toray’s Advanced Textiles Development Centre.
