Miguel Hames, president of the Córdoba footwear industry association, has said increases in costs, a drop in consumer spending and an increase in imported shoes have combined to make life difficult for local manufacturers.
In recent comments to local media, Mr Hames said the situation had not yet led to job losses, but he said some factories are reducing their hours. He described as “worrying” an increase his organisation has observed in the volume of imported footwear coming into Argentina. The new government that came into power at the end of 2015 has relaxed tariff regimes that previously made imported footwear less attractive to retailers and consumers.
