Growth in leather and footwear employment in Elche

Statistics for the Spanish town of Elche show that the number of people working in the local leather and footwear sector increased by 7.3% in 2015 compared to the year before.

In 2015, the leather and footwear sector employed almost 9,000 people in Elche. The industry accounts for more than 65% of all manufacturing jobs in the area, which includes the shoe manufacturing centres of Elda and Petrer.

Footwear companies in the area exported 152 million pairs of shoes in 2015, which represents a decline of 1.3% compared to 2014. However, export revenues in 2015 were up by 11.1% year on year, reaching more than €2.9 billion.
