Rwandan government to double footwear taxes to boost domestic production
Rwanda’s government has vowed to boost its leather industry by doubling taxes on imported ‘second-hand’ shoes, garments and leather products, according to reports in local press.
Prime Minister Anastase Murekezi said the increases will begin in the next fiscal year.
"We shall highly increase taxes on second-hand garments and shoes until they get off our market,” he said. “However, discouraging their importation must be accompanied by improving the local industry.
"We shall establish new firms manufacturing leather products and others treating animal skins to produce leather for manufacturers. We are also mobilising Rwandans to love locally made products through the 'Made in Rwanda' campaign."
