“The Italian partners expect to send 24 machines, with production capacity between 60 and 200 pieces per day by May at the latest,” said François Kanimba, Rwanda’s Minister of Trade and Industry.
The Italians have agreed to provide technology and know-how in terms of new product designs, development and other technical services.
The Italian delegation included Dr Sergio LaVerghetta, director of the agency for the promotion of foreign trade at the Italian Trade Commission in Johannesburg, and Patricio Cioni, president of PLURIPEL Group, an investor in the tannery sector.
The investment will take place over three phases. Phase one will include building a tannery for production of wet blue for export and 10% finished leather to supply to the local market; phase two will cover the upgrade of production from wet blue to finished leather; and phase three will see the establishment of a shoe factory alongside other Italian investors in leather products.
The parties agreed to complete the development by 2017.
