Japanese demand for cowboy boots diminishes

The Mexican state of Guanajuato, the country’s most important footwear-producing centre, increased by 5% year on year its shipments to Japan in the first eight months of 2015.

Between January and August this year, manufacturers in Guanajuato shipped just short of 250,000 pairs to Japan, compared to less than 240,000 in the same period in 2014.

On a less positive note, the value of the shipments in the first eight months of 2014 was higher than the figure for this year. In January-August 2015, Guanjuato footwear producers brought in $7.3 million from Japan, compared to $8.2 million for the lower volume shipped in the same months last year. The explanation is simple: in 2015, Guanajuato producers have seen less demand from Japan from their most valuable product, the artisan cowboy boot.
