Small rise for footwear as leather lets Bangladesh exports down

09/10/2015
Bangladesh’s export promotion bureau has posted a 2.8% decline in the overall value of leather-sector exports, including footwear, during the first two months of the current financial year, July and August 2015, compared to the same months in 2014.

This year, over those two months, Bangladeshi tanners and finished product manufacturers exported finished leather worth $46.8 million, leathergoods with an export value of $52.3 million and leather footwear with a value of $97.5 million.

The weak spot is finished leather: its values were down year on year by almost 30%, whereas those of leathergoods were up 29% and footwear’s by 2.1%.

A government target is in place for the industry to contribute $1.2 billion in exports between July 2015 and June 2016.
