Growth for online sales of sporting goods in Europe

01/06/2015
Market research firm NPD Group has said in a new report that online sales of sporting goods to consumers in five European countries reached levels of around €6.5 billion in 2014, an increase of €1 billion (19%) since 2013.

Its researched comprised analysis of the online purchase of 350,000 sports products, including shoes, apparel and equipment, by consumers in France, Spain, Germany, the UK and Italy last year.

However, NPD’s figures also suggest that online purchasing represented only 18% of overall spend in the European sports market last year. Online’s share is growing, but is not as big as it is in other consumer product sectors. For example, the Paris-based team of the market research firm said in the report that it believes a quarter of all toy sales in these European markets now takes place online.
