Celebrities hear disadvantaged children's plea for shoes

Ricky Gervais, Kevin Spacey, Kenny Rogers and Elizabeth Hurley are among 120 celebrities who have donated shoes to the Small Steps Project Celebrity Shoe Auction, which will take place online through the course of November.

Launched in 2010, the auction raised £53,000 last year to provide emergency aid, shoes and food to children and communities living on municipal rubbish dumps around the world.

Organisers said: “When we visited our first dump in Cambodia, back in 2009, we asked the families living on the dump what they needed most. Shoes was the overwhelming answer. The conditions that the families work in meant that, without appropriate shoes, they were constantly suffering from severe injuries on their feet.”

An exhibition of some of the shoes – including those belonging to Beyoncé, One Direction, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Usain Bolt, Natalie Portman, Jack Nicholson and Christian Bale – will take place in Shoreditch, London, on November 1.

The auctions will take place in separate categories, with more information available via the charity’s website:
