Custom last construction and leather selection were among topics on the agenda at a five-day workshop organised by the US-based Two Ten Foundation and taught by a team from Ars Sutoria in Milan.

“Understanding every single aspect of the production process makes you better at what you do,” said Javier Khachadourian, who travelled from Argentina to study methods to help grow their family business making outsoles for the South American shoe market.

David Filar, a Vibram designer and recipient of a $2,500 Two Ten scholarship, described it as the best thing he could have done for his career.

The course included a trip to Clarks in Massachussets, where the delegates saw how custom lasts are constructed and how specific leathers are chosen and applied to new models.
