India’s latest Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI) has been inaugurated in the Punjab during a ceremony attended by government officials.

FDDI managing director Raajeev Lakhara said: “The centre will cater to all needs of the footwear, leather and retail industries including design, testing and consultancy and will be a landmark in the development of Punjab.”

The campus will accommodate between 850 and 1,000 students and will be fully operational from the 2015-16 academic year. Housing for 500 students, staff quarters and a sports complex are also planned.

In January, the Indian government announced a leather development programme which will run until 2017 and will include the construction of two FDDIs.

FDDI campuses are also located in Noida, Fursatganj, Chennai, Kolkata, Rohtak, Chhindwara, Jodhpur and Guna.
