FICE hints at regional shows in addition to Momad

The second edition of the Momad Metropolis exhibition in Madrid, the new venture that incorporated, from September 2013, the Modacalzado and Iberpiel events, took place in Madrid from February 14-16.

In total, 135 footwear firms took part as exhibitors, most of the grouped together in one hall of the Ifema exhibition centre, which the shoe companies said was an improvement on September’s inaugural show. The organisers also said there was an increase in the number of visitors, thanks in part to the show taking place during Madrid Fashion Week.

However, the president of the Spanish footwear manufacturers’ association, FICE, José Sanchís, said at the end of the event that his member companies had taken few orders from visitors. “Customers seem to want to wait until after the Micam event in Milan in early March or until they have had visits from manufacturers’ sales representatives before finalising their orders,” he said.

He suggested that Spanish footwear manufacturers took more orders at Modacalzado when it took place after Micam. Micam’s organisers have decided to bring their dates forward in the calendar because, they say, buyers like to see new ideas for future seasons as soon as possible.

José Sanchís said he thinks it will be interesting to see if his supposition is confirmed in September, when Micam will take place earlier than Momad Metropolis. But he added that it might be a good idea to set up regional footwear events in large cities, including Madrid, Barcelona and Seville, closer to the times buyers seem to want to finalise their orders.
