The Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST) has trained a group of orphans in footwear manufacturing as part of a wider scheme organised by the Bauchi State government to equip them with the skills to enter different vocations.

The chairperson of the Bauchi State Orphans and Vulnerable Children's Agency, Hajiya Bahijja Mahmud, said the initiative gave the students a sense of belonging and made them self-reliant.

The director general of NILEST, Isuwa Kari Adamu, asked the government to provide the trainees with equipment so that can utilise the skills they have learned at the institute.
