Asia strategy pays off for Italian footwear companies
19/09/2013
Cleto Sagripanti, president of Italian footwear association Assocalzaturifici, said this was due in part to the entrepreneurial skills of Italian companies but was also due to growth strategies and increased visibility brought about by footwear fairs such as Micam Shanghai.
Between January and May, 98.2 million pairs were exported (1.3 million more than the same period of 2012) with a value of EUR 3.3 billion. Asia saw the largest rise, growing 31% in China, 14% in South Korea and 8% in Japan.
Average prices increased 3.5%, and although this was a slower growth rate than last year, prices are being aligned to compensate for the increase in the price of raw materials.
Mr Sagripanti said: “The positive performance of our companies in China is no surprise to us, because it is accompanied by the success of Micam Shanghai: 248 companies, of which 30% were foreign, in an area of over 5,000 square metres met almost 6,000 operators from all over the Far East. And in the next edition we will exceed 250 companies, an achievement that has been originated by the ability to find and forge strategic alliances with Italian and foreign partners.”
