New head of footwear at Italian business organisation

08/05/2013
Tonino Ciannavei, who runs children’s footwear brand Franco Romagnoli in the town of Morrovalle, has been elected as the new president of the footwear branch of business organisation Confindustria in the Italian province of Macerata.

Mr Ciannavei promised to use the position to send out clear messages to politicians at all levels about the importance of the footwear industry in Italy as a source of employment and wealth. He said he would also campaign for more supportive policies from banks.

Macerata, in the region of Le Marche, is one of Italy’s most important footwear manufacturing provinces, with 12,000 people working in the industry there in almost 1,000 footwear companies. Only 130 of these companies manufacture on an industrial scale, with the rest in the hands of artisans.

Across Le Marche as a whole, 32,000 people work in 3,000 footwear manufacturing companies. Le Marche accounts for around 40% of all footwear manufacturing firms in Italy.
