Spain’s technology institute for footwear and related industries, Inescop, has revealed the names of seven tanners and footwear manufacturers who have led the way with oxazolidine-tanned leather, one of the alternatives to chrome-based tanning systems for which Inescop has won recognition from the European Commission.

Two tanneries are in the list of seven companies. Ternerías Omega, a tannery based in Navarra in northern Spain, specialising in upholstery leather for automotive and aerospace clients, is one. At its tannery near the small town of Villatuerta, about 40 kilometres from Pamplona, it processes around 18,000 bovine hides, producing about 90,000 square-metres of finished leather per month.

The other tannery Inescop has named among its oxazolidine-tanned leather pioneers is Tenerías Cuator, based in Vall D’Uixo in Castellón.

Footwear companies who have been early adopters in putting oxazolidine-tanned leather into their shoes are Calzados Canós García and Calzados Moseipe, also from Vall D’Uixo, and Calzados Dian, Calzados Dechics and Todo Para Sus Pies from the province of Alicante.
