Bangladesh reports rapid rise in shoe sector earnings
The footwear sector in Bangladesh recorded export
turnover of $335.5 million during the financial year 2011-12. According to the
country’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) export turnover for the prior-year
period was just $297.8 million.
Local footwear manufacturers produced leather shoes worth
approximately $207.7 million during the year, exporting between 40% and 45% of
these, or approximately 65 million pairs.
According to the Financial
Express, local shoemakers including Apex-Adelchi Footwear, Jennys,
Landmark, Leatherex, Bay Footwear and Picard Bangladesh, are expanding their
facilities in a bid to keep up with increased demand. Several of these firms
are also importing machinery so that they are able to improve the quality of
the footwear they produce.
