The Indian government says it plans to open a new Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) in Rupnagar, Punjab, at a cost of around one billion rupees ($18.3 million).

The institute will be home to representatives from the footwear and leathergoods design, management, retail and marketing segments.

A site will be picked on July 6, when a delegation from the ministry of commerce and industry visit the area to assess the most suitable venue.

MP Ravneet Singh Bittu claims the new centre will generate jobs for local workers and boost the local economy.
