Gucci launches biodegradable shoe collection

01/06/2012
Luxury brand Gucci has launched a new limited-edition line of footwear called Sustainable Soles. As the name suggests, Gucci claims the new collection is kind to the environment as the shoes are biodegradable.

Frida Giannini, the brand’s creative director, created Sustainable Soles; Gucci will include them in its autumn 2012 collection. Two of the styles in the collection are flats called Marola Green and sports shoes called California Green.

The latter have uppers made from vegetable-tanned black calfskin and natural rubber souls. Even the laces are certified organic.

Marola Green shoes are made entirely from a bioplastic material that Gucci says meets international standards for biodegradability. They are available in bright pink, moleskin brown and black.
