Brazilian owners suspend Alpargatas production in Argentina
Reports from Argentina say footwear manufacturer Alpargatas has suspended part of its production there for five working days around the Easter holiday.
Brazilian-owned Alpargatas employs around 5,000 people in nine factories across Argentina, in which it produces six million pairs of shoes a year.
Owing to what the Brazilian owners have referred to as an excess of stock, about a fifth of the workforce has been told not to go to work on five specific dates. Argentinean media have suggested the company will have to pay around 70% of the agreed salaries of the workers who have been asked to stand down for those days to avoid a reaction from the government in Buenos Aires.
