Atlanta college holds Manolo Blahnik exhibition
An art college in Atlanta, US, is celebrating Spanish footwear designer Manolo Blahnik’s shoes and shoe designs with an exhibition about his work.
Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is displaying the exhibition ‘Manolo Blahnik... The Shoe’ until September 23, 2011.
In addition to sketches and other related items, there are 56 different Manolo Blahnik shoes on show, including three pairs featured in the television show “Sex and the City” – such as the Compari red patent leather Mary Janes.
“People live and breathe for this particular style of Mary Janes,” said Ariel Krantz, director of events and exhibits for SCAD-Atlanta.
The designer, who has been based in London since the early 1970s, visited the Georgia coast in May to receive SCAD’s André Levin Talley Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Many of the shoes in the exhibition are prototypes, one of a kinds, and from the designer’s personal collection. Manolo Blahnik personally names all his shoes and slots them into categories.
“Manolo Blahnik is a designer like no other,” Ms Krantz said. “His works range from highly conceptual to more practical, but he has a really strong playful side to him.”
