FCC launches renewable alternative

07/04/2011
Brazilian footwear materials provider FCC has launched what it claims is a "world-first sustainable solution" for the footwear industry.

FCC's new product, Fortiprene TR Verde, is a thermoplastic for soling and insole materials material made from renewable, plant-based sources that offer better flexibility, appearancea dnd strength than similar products have until now, the company has said.

Director Julio Schimitt said FCC was aiming to devote 50% of its production capacity to Fortiprene by 2013, meaning it would make around 30,000 tonnes of it.

Ahead of the Fimec exhibition in Novo Hamburgo, which starts on April 12, FCC made a prototype shoe with 80% of the components constructed from renewable materials. Afonso Felix, head of product development, said the company just wanted to show designers and brands that "sustainable alternatives" are possible.
