Argentina launches anti-dumping investigation

Footwear imports from China to Argentina fell by 20% in February, but the South American country is still going to go ahead with an investigation into possible dumping of shoes from its Asian trading partner after industry figures presented complaints that their Chinese counterparts were receiving state aid to make export prices falsely low.

The president of the footwear manufacturing association of Argentina, Alberto Sellaro, welcomed the government's decision to investigate. He told local media: "We've been working on this for a year, gathering evidence of trade-distorting practices on the part of China."

He said shoes were coming into Argentina from China at $2 a pair, which he insisted was a clear indication that "illegal practices" were going on.

Mr Sellaro also said that the government-backed scheme to encourage parents to buy shoes made in Argentina from Argentinian leather for the new school year was going well, with demand for the products high.
