Spain is the latest country in Europe to suffer a consumer confidence crisis because of dimethyl fumarate. The chemical substance was found in diseccant sachets in the packaging for consignments of shoes and handbags.
A footwear brand in Elche has been at the centre of some isolated cases of allergic reacion among consumers; similar to those suffered by French shoppers in the autumn.
The Spanish minister for health and consumer affairs, Antonio Amorós, announced on January 15 that the government would seek to have removed from store shelves any product that might have come into contact with dimethyl fumarate, which will affect consignments of furniture as well as footwear across the country.
