The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was guest of honour at the opening day of the Couromoda leather exhibition in Sao Paulo on January 12.

He spoke in positive terms about the Brazilian leather footwear sector, saying that three years ago it looked to be finished, but was now showing “extraordinary vitality”.

The president said Brazil would continue on an improvement plan known as the Growth Acceleration Programme (PAC) because, he insisted, it was important for the country to be ready to take advantage of the global economic downturn.
