Manufacturers in Ho Chi Minh City have laid off almost 11,000 workers since the global economic slowdown began to make an impression on Vietnam.
The workers' federation in the country's main industrial centre has said 46 companies have shed jobs, with many of them coming from the footwear sector. The federation said 10,726 people had lost their jobs in recent months, the majority of them in footwear, apparel and textiles, furniture, electronics and food.
