Footwear exports down, leather up
06/01/2009
The regional government of the Balearic Islands has confirmed that exports of leather went up last year, while exports of the region’s principal product, leather footwear, fell.
The figures correspond to the first half of 2008 only, and show that footwear exports were down by 8.6% overall. Sales of shoes from Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera to Italy were down by 5.5%, to Greece by 13.1%, to Belgium by 12.9% and to the UK by 1.9%. There was better news for the region’s footwear brands (which include famous names such as Camper, Farrutx, and Jaime Mascaró) in the German and French markets, which were up by 8.9% and 6.5% respectively.
The regional authorities said exports of Balearic leather had risen considerably. Exports of hides to markets such as Hong Kong and China recorded an increase of almost 50% on the same period in 2007, while exports of finished leather to France, the UK and Germany rose by 23.6%.
