Footwear exporters keep sights high despite economy

The Vietnamese footwear industry is targetting export growth of 12%–13% this year.

Nguyen Duc Thuan, chairman of the Leather and Footwear Association, said the year would be tough for producers, with their customers severely affected by the global economic downturn, but said his organisation was still optimistic about achieving growth.

He told local media that the main problem for the industry in Vietnam was the usual labour shortage after the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday later this month, when workers often fail to return from their home towns.

The feeling in Vietnam is that expansion into Africa and the Middle East will make up for the downturn in more established markets.
