Warning over tariff removal
09/12/2008
Sergio Castro, president of the tanners' association of Guanajuato (Cicur), has told local media that a full analysis of the situation, compiled by his organisation and by its counterparts in footwear, would become available to the government’s economics ministry by December 12.
Mr Castro said he felt the Mexican government was coming under pressure from the World Trade Organisation to lift tariffs, but that it had to be aware of the possible consequences for local producers of taking such a step. His suggestion is that the Mexican government should find a way of rewarding its own manufacturing companies, “they way other countries do”, he said.
He added that the cost of doing business in Mexico—in terms of energy costs and tax levels—is too high for his member companies to be competitive with tanners in Asia.
