Import ban

France's minister of consumer affairs, Luc Chatel, confirmed on December 5 that he had signed legislation prohibiting any further imports into the country of footwear consignments that contain dimethylfumarate.

The chemical acts as a safeguard against mould while products are in transit, but it has been blamed for a number of cases of allergic reactions among French consumers. Footwear imported from China by retail groups including Etam, Eram and La Halle had to be removed from store shelves in November after a series of cases of skin ailments came to light.
