Tourism tops footwear

The chamber of commerce in Spain's main footwear production province, Alicante, will support greater promotion of tourism next year than of the shoe manufacturing industry.

Nine tourism projects will receive funding for promotion in external markets in 2009 compared to only five specific to footwear, an industry that has traditionally been a top priority for the local authorities owing to the amount of export revenue it brings in.

Footwear exports from manufacturers in the province (which includes prominent shoe-producing towns such as Elche and Elda) were down by 16.7% for the first nine months of this year.
