Talk in Asia of anti-dumping solution

20/11/2008

Official media outlets in Asia have suggested that the European Commission may be trying to engineer an early end to anti-dumping duties on imports of leather footwear from Vietnam.

Quoting the Vietnam Economic Times, officials in China have reported that European Commission officials have asked the Vietnamese authorities to agree a minimum retail sales price Vietnamese leather shoes in European Union (EU) countries. The suggestion is that if Vietnam voluntarily agrees to this, the European Commission will remove the 10% anti-dumping duties these products have been subject to since October 2006.

If both sides agree, Vietnamese leather footwear on sale in the EU could be free from anti-dumping duties from January 1.

The European Commission is conducting a formal review of the anti-dumping measures at the moment and sent representatives to Vietnam on November 13. If the outcome of the review is that Vietnamese manufacturers have ceased to export leather footwear at a falsely low price (the definition of 'dumping'), the imposition of the minimum retail price would also be lifted.
