First job-losses in five years

14/11/2008

The state of São Paulo suffered its first monthly loss of jobs in five years in October, with a decline of 0.41%, according to a survey by the
São Paulo Federation of Industries

This figure represents a loss of 10,000 and the federation’s head of research, Paulo Francini, said the footwear industry—along with the furniture and textiles sectors—was one of the worst affected.

He said: “The decline in employment in the month was not numerically that important. What really was important was the change. There was a reversal in the growth curves.”

He said employers were convinced that demand will slow at home and abroad next year and are making adjustments accordingly.
