Córdoba calls for help

06/11/2008

A business organisation called the Industrial Union of Córdoba (UIC) has called on the Argentinian government to intervene to help manufacturing companies there steer their way through the current economic crisis by providing funding and reducing taxes.

The UIC said that footwear producers were "at the head of the queue".

It explained that, while this had been a difficult year overall, the situation had become much worse in the last 10 or 20 days because of falling demand and, in some cases, orders being cancelled.

Many manufacturing firms in and around the city have cancelled overtime and weekend shifts and some are considering bringing workers' summer holidays forward in an attempt to ride out the immediate storm.
