Shoe brands push for Affordable Footwear Act

27/10/2008
Almost 50 US firms representing more than 160 well-known footwear brands and retailers, are behind a new letter sent to Congress urging it to pass the Affordable Footwear Act, which is designed to make shoes more affordable for lower-income families.

Concerned about the slowing economy and the credit crunch that is reducing consumer spending, the footwear sector has urged Congress to include the Act in a larger economic stimulus package.

The Affordable Footwear Act eliminates the costly import tariff, also known as the shoe tax, on lower to moderately-priced footwear and on all children’s shoes. The shoe tax can add as much as 30% or more to the retail price of a pair of shoes.
