UITIC Congress a success

20/10/2008

The sixteenth congress of the International Union of Shoe Industry Technicians (UITIC) was a great success, the organisation has said.

The event took place in and around Elche, the main centre of footwear production in Spain, from October 16–18, starting with a series of visits to local manufacturers (including Pikolinos, Manolitas, Pedro García and Tempe), followed by a lively conference with sessions covering consumer demand, product innovation, technology, management, and sustainable development.

There was also a formal dinner on the evening of October 17 at which UITIC awarded prizes to various figures in the footwear industry. The business prize went to Giovanni Biagini of the Sabal Group, a manufacturer of footwear production machinery in Italy. A prize for scientific research went to Marc Folachier, ex-director of the CTC research centre in Lyon. At the same time, the technicians’ prize went to leather chemistry expert José Luis Poveda of Spain’s Inescop footwear technology institute.

UITIC president, César Orgilés, said the organisation is considering holding these events every two years again, after a spell of leaving three years between each one. He also said the next congress will take place outside Europe, with UITIC considering applications from India and Mexico at the moment.
