23/09/2008

Organisations representing footwear manufacturers in Europe published an open letter to European trade commissioner, Peter Mandelson, in the pages of the Financial Times on September 20.

The newspaper published reports of the Brussels meeting on September 17 at which representatives of the 27 member companies voted against continuing with anti-dumping measures against imports of leather shoes from Vietnam and China but did not inlcude any comment from manufacturers. The Italian National Footwear Manufacturers’ Association said it had decided to pay to have the open letter published to put across some of the arguments in favour of keeping the ,easures in place. It said it had paid €60,000 for the privilege.

The Financial Times later told footwearbiz.com that its reporter had approached manufacturing bodies for comment but had received no answer in time to meet the paper’s deadline.
