Bata boost in spite of instability

Bata Pakistan has posted a profit before tax of $2.7 millionfor the fiscal year ended June 30, 2008, compared to $1.6 million for the corresponding period of last year. Net turnover improved by 32%, which the company has said was "remarkable under the circumstances" of the Pakistani economy.
Power crises, an unstable political situation and economic depression still had an adverse effect on the
business, but all departments still managed to contribute to the result.
The company has taken the step of opening 18 large-format retail stores, while closing 11 smaller outlets that it said had ceased to be profitable. The company's wholesale division has also achieved record sales in this period and it expects this trend tocontinue.
