New Asian shoe firms to open units in Bangladesh

Taiwanese company Messrs Greenland Footwear has signed an agreement with the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) allowing it to set up a footwear manufacturing facility in the extension area of the Karnaphuli Export Processing Zone, northern Bangladesh. The unit is expected to cost Tk1500 million ($22 million).

Around 3.6 million pairs of shoes will be manufactured annually for exportation. Around 3,540 jobs will be created for local workers, while around 40 will be created for foreign nationals.

In addition, a Korean company, M/s. Dae Myung Shoes and Accessories Limited, has received approval from BEPZA to set up a shoe and shoe component factory at the Karnaphuli Export Processing Zone. This is expected to involve an investment of Tk5200 million. Around 1,755 Bangladeshi and five foreign national jobs will be generated.
