Leicester footwear statue repaired
The Clicker, a 1.25-ton bronze statue celebrating the role of Leicester’s footwear manufacturing industry, has been repaired and re-erected following recent vandalism in the UK city. The statue is now located in a secure location on New Walk.
Leicester remains an important shoe making centre and it is estimated that approximately half the shoes sold in the UK are designed, specified, warehoused, imported from and distributed in Leicester.
Manufacturing continues in Leicester on a smaller scale than before; however, footwear education to serve the wider industry continues in the city. The International School of Footwear at Leicester College offers a two-year foundation degree course, while the Footwear Design Degree Course at DeMontfort University is oversubscribed.
