Online shoe sales soar
While high streets in the UK appear fairly bare, online sales have been rocketing according to figures from the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index. It claims that the recent wet weather has seen online footwear, clothing and accessories sales rise by an impressive 23%.
Online electrical sales also grew, but many sectors saw a decline in sales in July. However, despite tighter lending conditions, consumers in the UK spent more than £4.8 billion online in July, a monthly increase of 11.3%.
Head of retail consulting at Capgemini UK, Mike Petevinos, said: "Gloomy market conditions have not dampened consumers' appetite for shopping online. "The increase in clothing and footwear sales demonstrates consumers' ever increasing familiarity with e-retailing, extending their shopping behaviour into more and more categories."
Meanwhile, figures from the British Retail Consortium show that high street sales fell 0.9% in July compared with June.
